Community Sow & Grow for Beanfeast
Roots4Life presents Join Woolwich Works and Roots4Life as we sow beans together for the upcoming Beanfeast festival this July at Woolwich Works!
Did you know that beans are loved by bees due to their bright coloured flowers? Learn about different beans and plant some for the Woolwich Works garden planned for this summer. Participants will be able to take away their own salad or herb window planter using old milk cartons and seeds kindly donated from the Royal Horticultural Society. Come and help Woolwich Works and Roots4Life decide what vegetables to grow in the planned vegetable garden collage. All seeds and materials are provided in this free, drop-in workshop.
Beanfeast is the national holiday proclaimed by King George III during his first ever visit to Woolwich Arsenal in 1773. Arriving by barge on 6 July, he declared the day a new annual "bean-feast" holiday after enjoying an open-air feast of beans and bacon with a group of local workers. Woolwich Works are bringing back Beanfeast this year - marking the 251st anniversary of this celebration.
Woolwich Works are proud to partner with Roots4Life on this free community event leading up to our new Beanfeast Festival on Sat 6 July. Roots4Life are an innovative charity dedicated to greening and growing. Based in Greenwich with an 8-acre site with allotment beds, commercial-size polytunnel and rewilding area, the charity officially opened in 2021. Join Sophie Amos and the Roots4Life team to plant a wide selection of fantastic and unusual beans to grow in the Woolwich Works garden. Sophie is the Charity Manager at Roots4Life and the daughter of a fifth-generation Kentish hop farmer. She is passionate about teaching children and adults about growing vegetables in all sorts of settings and environments and encouraging urban dwellers to get sowing and growing!
