Chineke! are a resident artistic company at Woolwich Works. Founded in 2015 by the double bass player, Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE, to provide career opportunities for young Black and ethnically diverse classical musicians in the UK and Europe, Chineke!’s mission is, “championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music”. Chineke! is fulfilling this mission through concerts by the majority-Black and ethnically diverse professional Chineke! Orchestra, by the creation of the Chineke! Junior Orchestra for 11-22 year old diverse musicians, and through a Learning & Participation programme which takes the joy and stimulation of creative music-making into schools across the UK and further afield.
2:30PM BOLLYWOOD BRASS BRAND
Bollywood Brass Band is the UK’s pioneering Indian-style brass band, playing the great tunes and compulsively danceable rhythms of Bollywood.
Twice nominated for Songlines World Music Awards, the band has performed all over the world – in venues, at festivals, and for Indian weddings in the UK, Norway, India, Thailand and South Africa. The Bollywood Brass Band is versatile, playing both amplified stage sets and in a street formation, and they are equally at home headlining a festival or delivering exciting workshops in schools.
In recent years they have worked with exceptional talents such as singer Rafaqat Ali Khan and Carnatic Violinist Jyotsna Srikanth on several releases and performances, in conjunction with institutions such as Arts Council England and PRS Foundation’s Women Make Music.
With brass, saxophone, dhol drums and a colossal sousaphone, the Bollywood Brass Band is one of the most colourful, joyful and exhilarating acts around.
3:45PM SHE'S GOT BRASS
Introducing She’s Got Brass, London’s groundbreaking 10-piece female-fronted brass band. With a dynamic rhythm section featuring percussion and kit alongside the rich tones of tuba and baritone saxophone. Their ensemble boasts renowned female players from the heart of the London Jazz scene from esteemed acts like Seed Ensemble, Colectiva, New Regency Orchestra, Bonita House Band and TC and the Groove Family. They infuse their performances with a fusion of original compositions and beloved funk and soul classics, all with a contemporary twist.
5PM BYRON WALLEN
Widely recognised as a seminal figure in Jazz, Wallen is an acclaimed writer and producer whose original scores have been commissioned by the Science Museum; PRS, The BBC, Jerwood Foundation, Southbank Centre, National Theatre, Arts Council, FIFA and Sage Gateshead. He has also composed soundscapes for Universal Pictures, Warner Bros and Game of Thrones.
Wallen has received the BBC Jazz Innovation award (2003) and has been nominated several times for the MOBO award. In 2017 he received the coveted Paul Hamlyn Award. In 2020 his band Four Corners was nominated for the best band category at the Parlimentary Jazz Awards and best album in 2021. His arranging credits include Grace Jones, Ed O'Brien, Jonny Greenwood and he has performed as member of the bands of jazz legends Andrew Hill, Jack Dejohnette, Mulatu Astatke and King Sunny Ade.
